No shoes, no clock, and lots of sunblock combine to make a great vacation at the Outer Banks of North Carolina–our family’s favorite vacation spot for the past 25 years.
Hubby and I spent last week enjoying Corolla, a town rich in history and vacation homes. Although we’ve always enjoyed walking along the beach, digging our toes in the sand, and watching dolphins swim by, the sound caught our affection along with soundfront rental homes. And soundfront is within easy walking distance from the ocean.
Since pictures describe the beauty of this area better than words, below are a few highlights of Corolla…
Scenic views from the observation deck of the Currituck Lighthouse await those who can climb the open metal staircase…Hubby could but not me
An inside view of the lighthouse from top to bottom
A view from the top. Looking toward the Whalehead Club and sound
We watched several folks wind surfing on the sound. Sometimes a strong gust of wind would take them into the air.
Built in the 1920’s as a hunt club and second home, the Whalehead Club has been renovated to the original ornate details. We enjoyed a free tour of the mansion. No photography is allowed inside the home.
The restored boathouse for the Whalehead Club
An osprey nest. We watched both mom and dad osprey take care of their young
Turtles are everywhere. Here’s one enjoying the sunshine
The low, twisting branches of the live southern oaks make great climbing trees…almost made me want to be a kid again
Sunset over the sound, view from our deck. Time to say good night and goodbye…
