Letter from a New Acquaintance

The other day I received a 6×10” envelope from the United States US Postal Service. No, this piece of mail did not simply arrive via the US Postal Service, it actually came from them. At least most of it originated within the post office, but not all.

Printed on the back of the envelope was a very kind letter from Your Postmaster, even though I have never met “Your”, whoever he/she might be.

Your’s letter explained that the US Post Office handles 202 billion pieces of mail each year. Some get “inadvertently damaged in handling”. The letter went on to clarify that Your and his/her fellow employees work hard to eliminate these incidents, but alas, such things do happen on occasion.

If at all possible, every piece of mail must be delivered. To meet this requirement, Your, or someone working with him/her, places whatever is left of the damaged mail into an official US Postal Service envelope and sends it to the original recipient.

Ahh Haa … that explained the contents of the envelope – the ragged, outside sheet of my CBD sale catalog which had pages 1, 2, 31and 32 printed on it.

Whatever bargains pages 3 through 30 contained will forever remain a mystery, but at least I have a new acquaintance, Your.
